Acquiring a Masterpiece Hot Rod (Hot Rodimus, Rodimus Convoy or Rodimus Prime to some) has sat on the bottom of the list for quite some time. 1) Because a 2009 MP-09 model is difficult to come by nowadays, 2) They resell for nearly twice to three times as much, and 3) Many toy collectors have experienced QC issues that left them disappointed. While many loved the MP-09 for his trailer and size, he was apparently plagued with sensitive and easily breakable parts which made it frustrating to transform and to pose.

My only option was to look into buying third party. With the many QC issues that third party toys do have themselves, DX9 Carry wasn't all that bad based on the reviews I've read. But alas, I preferred a Takara product and I patiently waited.

MP-28 is the second Hot Rod model to release in the Masterpiece series. Some would say MP-28 is an entirely different character, as MP-09 came with the trailer as Rodimus Prime (or Rodimus Convoy), but for the sake of me not having an MP-09, I'll say they're the same. Aside from the missing trailer, MP-28 Hot Rod is closer to MP-10 scale in a sense that he is the same size as the other cars and can fit in MP-10's trailer, which is a huge plus.

The tooling and engineering for this years model has also changed. To me, it's an upgrade in many ways. Although I don't have an MP-09, I haven't experienced QC issues with this one yet, nor have I read about them. So far I'd say it's a solid design.

Vehicle mode looks awesome right off the bat. The lines are cleaner than MP-09 and looks very well put together with fewer 'linebreaks'. The engine block and exhaust pipes are larger, relative to it's scale, which makes the car looks more aggressive and showcases the true essence of what Hod Rod is supposed to look like. MP-09 still does look pretty awesome and is more in tune with the cartoon, but that aside, I do prefer the MP-28 for it's overall sleek look and darker maroon color. If there is one thing I don't like, it's the half assed wheels Takara put on them. I wish they had done more with that. It barely rolls on a flat surface and looks ugly.

Robot mode is where MP-28 shines because the difference between this and the MP-09 is night and day. Overall, MP-28 in robot mode looks perfect and more screen accurate than MP-09, IMO. Not only is he smaller, he is less bulky as well. Parts of the torso fold in and the roof glass is entirely hidden from site for a much cleaner and refined look. The legs also look better - way less bulk in the lower shins/footing area.

Like, MP-09, his head is equipped with his blue visor, but alot easier to pull down. I also like the shape of the head on this model more than the MP-09. He looks way more aggressive and 'cocky', which matches his TV persona perfectly.

MP-28 comes with a few accessories: his saw blade, twin photon lasers and a fishing rod. Why? Because of that ONE scene in the movie. Love it or hate it, it's there. For something that transforms into a car, the engineering involved to design this is already impressive. Add in articulation and pose-ability, it's something else. Everything in robot mode is articulated with full range or close-to full range of motion. Everything from his ball jointed head, double jointed arms to his swivel hips and flexible ankle joints, everything is there. All the awhile he stays true to his cartoon counterpart in both forms with very little bulk and zero kibble. Takara has done it again, and with the MP-28, it definitely lives up to the Masterpiece name. Now give us the trailer.

It's been awhile since I've written one of these. I'm currently not in basketball shape by anymeans, but I do know footwear. I know footwear inside out. I love shoes after all. So this is my review of the Nike Kobe 11 'Carpe Diem'. My last review was recapping the 'love 'em or hate 'em' Nike Kobe VII System, to which didn't work out for me. The interchangeable cushioning just didn't make the cut for what could have been a new addition to my regular rotation. This tech was the first of it's kind for a Nike Signature. I emphasize Nike because Jordan Brand touched on it with the Air Jordan 22 back in 2007 with interchangeable pods of Zoom Air and Encapsulated Air. And then went up a notch by incorporating that same feature in an entirely removable and interchangeable midsole/insole combo on the Air Jordan 2011 which became the flagship sig for Dwyane Wade.

So with that piece of useless sneaker info I mentioned above, here is the review of the new Nike Kobe 11 'Carpe Diem'.

Materials

I knew from the get-go that the 'Carpe Diem' model would be releasing in Engineered Mesh. I'm not totally opposed to this because I love EM, but what I really wanted was Flyknit. Primarily because I have yet to try out Flyknit on a basketball court and I generally liked the look of it better.

Engineered Mesh is robust, durable and provides more than adequate support without going heavy on materials, which adds value in making the shoe as light as possible. EM is woven in a way that creates various sized 'vents'or holes to allow for breath ability. Another perk in using EM as opposed to conventional materials is very little of seams (or lack there of on the Hyperfuse). We all know that chaffing material without breath ability is bad, so the least amount of stitching/seams to scratch or chafe the foot is always a plus.

The entire upper, except the sock liner is Engineered Mesh that is reinforced in injury prone areas, such as the toe-cap, ankle and heal, leaving room on the lateral, instep and toe-box for air to breeze through. The lacing system is external and even that is reinforced with nylon thread. Having re-enforcement in these high-wear areas rather than building a very durable shoe all around is a good thing. Makes the shoe lighter by saving weight and allows for more freedom of movement.

I enjoyed the breath ability on these. Although it wasn't as apparent wearing Nike Elite socks, I wasn't chafing, nor was I getting overly sweaty or hot. It was a nice experience to ball in something that not only breathes a little, but allows a full range of motion.

Traction

If there is anything that I don't like about the shoe, it would probably be the traction. The outsole is translucent on this model with tiny brick-style patterns on the bottom. I'm not sure what it is, but the traction wasn't there at all times. Many factors can be involved. It could be the translucent compound, the pattern on the bottom or the dusty auxiliary gym flooring (it wasn't hardwood). Either way. the traction wasn't as good as the Kobe 4 'Carpe Diem'. I am comparing the 4 because it also sports the 'Carpe Diem' theme and the translucent outsole. It is also one of the best shoes to ever wear on a basketball court, so I wanted to see how this Kobe fairs up to my favorite pair 7 models prior.

Details on the traction pattern.

A few things could be improved in the traction department without alot of R & D. Taking back to the concept of tire treads and previous models, I have a feeling that herringbone patterns and solid rubber outsoles would make significant improvements to the traction. It's been used for years. Why mess with a good thing? I've also read up on a fair number of reviews prior to purchasing and traction seems to be an issue for most players using the 11 with clear outsoles. I just wanted to see for myself. Of course, the traction wasn't terrible, I've had worse (early model Air Jordans for example), but Nike could have stuck to the basics on this one.

Cushioning

The best part of the shoe is probably the cushioning. Nike went a different route for this model and opted for a full length Lunarlon midsole/insole combo (for simplicity sake, I am going to just call it a midsole from here on out). Again, a feature I didn't really want, but I couldn't complain. I've worn the 2008 Hyperdunk for years and it's always served as a nice and comfy ride as far Lunarlon goes, so putting it in a Kobe again would be just as good.

The cushioning was superb and performed exactly how Lunarlon is supposed to perform. The ride is cushy, comfortable and stable. All the attributes a casual ball player like myself would want. Although I didn't feel much on the forefoot, it did well for impact stabilization at the heel and worked decent on transition. That being said, I'm a fan of the Zoom Air set up even more. Zoom Air is more in-line with the competitive player and slasher guard-type game, but me being the stalkier elbow shooter who seldom drives to the basket, I like the Zoom for 'bounciness' and explosive transition response rather than slashing. I could tell I had way less of that with Lunar as it acted more for impact absorption than responsiveness. None the less, the cushioning was great.

Fitment

They fit true to size. In Nike Basketball, I am regular 8.5 and these were perfect. The sockliner, although very light, could have been beefier around the ankle collar, but that's just me. My feet are also pretty wide, and I had no issues with width fitment as I did with the Kobe 5, which I felt pressure on the shoulders of the feet and would get blisters over time.

Another thing I wanted to point out was the VAST improvement of fitment quality of the interchangeable midsole unit. The interchangeable midsole on the Kobe 7 had side walls (something the Air Jordan 2011-2012 did not have for good reasons), thus would cause great discomfort and blisters from the walls bending and caving in at the forefoot on transition. The Kobe 11 eliminated that flaw entirely by cutting that portion out to allow that area to bend without causing the walls to fold in and 'rub me the wrong way'. Good job, Nike.

Free-form foot bending without the rub

The tongue was nice and snug and felt comfortable when I laced them up, but they kept getting untied. Nylon laces suck and are slippery. If they weren't doubled knotted, it would come undone eventually. Overall, other than the lacing issues, the fitment was nice and felt locked down throughout.

Support/Stability

The Kobe 11 was trimmed of all its 'fat' to make a sleek, sexy low cut shoe. It almost looks and feels like it wouldn't do much in the support department. However, this soccer cleat looking silhouette does actually the opposite. The support at the ankle was tight and held my ankles in place. However, it was JUST adequate enough to give me that support. As I mentioned, I would have liked the sock liner to be a little bulkier to properly hug my ankles. But that's just me being picky. It obviously did it's job because I didn't even come close to rolling my ankles during play.

Ankle collar could be a bit thicker

The Elite pair wields Flyknit uppers with thin strand TPU threads weaved into it for reinforcement and stability. But the EM instead, rocks a TPU heal cup to cradle the foot in transitions and lateral movements, which provided excellent support as it was both sturdy and flexible when moving around.

Another feature that I loved was the double outrigger support. If you notice the outsole from the side or top view of the shoe, there is a little stub sticking out of the outter shoulder of the foot to make the footprint a bit wider on the bottom to improve support capabilities. This anti-rolling feature is called an 'outrigger'. A simple but crucial piece of 'tech' that was introduced in a number of shoes, namely the Kobe 4 and was brought over to the 5, 6, 7 and barely present on the 8s. The 9s, due to the super high-top Flyknit construction, didn't have it and neither did the 10s.

Nike brought back the outrigger support with an added feature on top - a second outrigger. Due to it's minimalist upper construction, adding the second outrigger on the mid-foot was a clever idea to add stability without adding extra bulk on the upper part of the shoe. So when looking directly at the midsole, it seems the shoe is wider and bulkier than they actually are.

OVERALL

In terms of performance, like the man himself, it's up there as one of the greats. The Kobe 11 presented a modern, sleek and minimalist approach to a well performing piece of art. The shoe it self looked very mature and refined and lacked any sort of extra bulk or fat that you didn't otherwise need.

The weight and fitment were excellent and the cushioning and support were even better. And although lacing and traction had some issues, the Kobe 11 can also sport different options in various colorways as well as Nike iD, which can feature solid rubber oursoles, different cushioning set ups and cotton laces. So in that aspect, I can build or purchase a perfect Kobe 11 just for me with a click of a mouse (and dent in the wallet).

Lastly, the Kobe 11 marked the final signature that the legend would ever wear in his illustrious career, so I was expecting something big from the 'Carpe Diem' model. Seeing as it was one of the flagship colorways on the Kobe 4, I expected this to go out with a bang. Yes, the colorway itself was on-point, but aesthetically speaking, I was a bit disappointed with the lack of lux materials and 'theme' on this shoe. I would have liked something that said 'Carpe Diem' or at the very least give us that same 'Running of the Bulls' logo they had on the 4 to further justify the colorway. To me, it just seemed like a 'Carpe Diem-inspired' colorway rather than the actual 'Seize the Day' model.

L: Kobe 4 'Carpe Diem' R: Kobe 11 'Carpe Diem'

That being said, it was a great shoe. But knowing more of what I have actually wanted in a Kobe 11 - Flyknit, Zoom Air, solid rubber outsoles - I sacrificed all that for a 'Carpe Diem' colorway that didn't quite hit the mark aesthetically. But it isn't an aesthetics review, I just wanted to point out that I could have been much happier with my original choice of the Tinker Hatfield 'Muse Pack' joint instead.
If you're a fan of the 1980s G1 Transformers, you're probably the most amped up for Takara's release of the MP-27 Ironhide. Although a Nissan Vanette isn't exactly the best looking alt mode out of the bunch, the past 3 decades of Ironhide G1 and G1-esque toys left collectors and toy buffs something to be desired. Because until now, we've never really seen an accurate version of his G1 cartoon counterpart. More after the jump.

Until I actually saw pictures of Masterpiece Ironhide, I originally wasn't too excited for his release as I was really hoping for an MP-10 scale Megatron. A Megatron that was not only a proper size, but wasn't as flimsy and skinny as the original MP-05. Of course, there are third party versions for Megatron and Ironhide, but an official Hasbro or Takara product is always preferred. Not to mention the QC issues associated with some third party toy companies (whom of which will remain nameless).
Unlike the previous G1 models which were derived from Takara's Diaclone line, MP-27 Ironhide is an accurate depiction of what Ironhide is supposed to look like. The engineering and tooling for MP-27 was one of the best I'd ever seen from the Masterpiece series in a sense that everything was in perfect scale and very little kibble/loose parts. In robot mode, he is almost as tall as MP-10 Optimus Prime yet remains in perfect scale with the other cars in vehicle mode, which means he can still fit in Prime's trailer.
I loved the fact that you can tuck in and hide almost all the unnecessary parts in robot mode (like his wheels) reducing all the kibble except the fenders on his hip. IMO though, I think you kind of need the splash of red around his waist, so I didn't mind it at all. It also didn't get in the way of anything, so it was a non-issue for me.
Transforming him wasn't too hard (15 min. on the first try. I don't know if that's too long or not lol). It'll take a couple tries to transform him from memory, but once you get past the chest plate transformation, it should all click pretty easily from there without the use of instructions. Pose-ability is probably one of the best in the Masterpiece line. His arms and shoulders can move in just about any direction and his ankle hinges adjust perfectly in almost every way possible, making his stance very stable and flush to the surface.
What impressed me the most in addition to the engineering, was his array of accessories, which was oddly satisfying to me in a sense that I felt like I got my moneys worth with all the goodies it came with (I didn't get that same feeling with MP-11SW Skywarp, which was a little disappointing at a $220 price tag). We didn't get his original battle platform/gun post accessory this time, but I'll take a G1 toon-accurate Ironhide over that any day. What we did get however, was ALL his accessories. Some of which, paid homage to the 1986 movie, like his radar, jet pack and 'finger cannons'. And if that's not enough, he comes with another face plate and a platform to hold everything. Awesome touch on Takara's part to compensate for the lack of his gun post.
Overall, I am very happy with the way Takara did this one. The size in both vehicle and robot mode are impressively accurate. The engineering was excellent in both transform-ability and range of motion. His accessories were spot on and great additions to the MP. And the iconic cherry red finish on the Nissan licensed Vanette put it over the top to make this MP one of the best ones yet. Also, if you look closely, you can see his easter egg in Alt mode - The famous 'chair face' is present, paying homage to his 1984 G1 mold that most people grew up with seeing.
After picking this guy up, I may pull the trigger on his Ratchet re-deco coming out very soon. I normally don't get into the re-decos, especially after purchasing the re-deco of MP-11 Starscream (MP-11SW Skywarp), who was not only expensive, but didn't come with anything. Not even a stand for Seeker mode. But because I really am happy with how Ironhide turned out, Ratchet is probably my next one on the list. Stay tuned for MP-28,
In light of "420", which is way behind us already, BAIT and Adidas Originals came together for a special mock-up of the classic Stan Smith to commemorate the unofficial weed holiday. This limited model of the Adidas Originals Stan Smith Vulc 'Happy' pays homage to the medical marijuana field and does it well with all the little details featured on the shoe. This 'Happy' Stan Smith is comprised of a unique all hemp upper with heat pressed cobble stone patterns for a cleverly 'stoned' look on top of a vulcanized rubber midsole. The tongue features a 'prescription' tag in likeness of your dispensary prescribed meds, as well as a stash pocket underneath for 'medical emergencies'.

I've been trying to sell my Kobes for years now. And now that he's retired, all these "Die-Hard Kobe Bryant Fans" come out of the woodwork. Since his last game, I've received maybe 10 texts and a string of e-mails asking if I have Kobes for sale still. No harm in that for me, because now people want them and they will pay a pretty coin to get them.

It's been 20 years since Kobe first stepped on the professional hardwood. And what a career it's definitely been. We all know his ups, his downs, his highs and his lows. His fans, his haters, and his teammates and the 20 seasons, 2 Olympics, 33643 career points and 6306 career assists. We know it all.
Love him or hate him, Kobe Bryant was undoubtedly one of the best basketball players in history and the NBA, media and even the sneaker community is not afraid to showcase his illustrious retirement and outstanding career. Kobe Bryant was welcomed in almost every city for his last away games. LA relished in his last physical presence in a Lakers uniform win or lose. People who normally don't talk about basketball mentioned Kobe's retirement as some breaking news that they needed to share with the world. The press, the NBA and his endorsement deals made that known as well.

Kobe, being Kobe, rode high into the sunset and didn't go quietly, dropping 60 points against the Jazz and coming back to take the win 101-96, capping off his already impressive 20 season resume. What caught the sneaker community's eye was his last game worn pair of Kobes you'll ever see on his feet, the Black Mamba XI.

As part of Nike's farewell campaign dedicated to his retirement, a slew of different footwear Kobe has worn during his career are being released in special colorways called 'Fade To Black'. From the Huarache 2K4 to the Kobe 1 to the Hyperdunk and to the final note of the masterpiece, the Kobe XI. This particular model of the Kobe sports the shape known all too well in the Kobe series, which involves a clean, simple low-cut silhouette, made for the true 1 and 2 guard with attention made to every detail.

As opposed to an entirely TPU heal counter to cradle the ankles with a separate upper, Eric 'E' Avar uses a different approach, which features a combination of Flyknit and TPU 'threads' to create a strong, more stable fiber while maintaining simplicity in the design. This complex, yet sophisticated Flyknit construction works in conjuction with a one piece, translucent outsole, which houses the Zoom cushioning - A staple in the Kobe Bryant signature for a more 'low-to-the-ground' feeling and responsiveness. In the Black Mamba colorway, the details are just as important - The golden swoosh, gold tipped lacing and the final game date on the heal adds to the finishing touch. Perfection in almost every aspect in E's design goes hand-in-hand with Kobe's game.

The Kobe Bryant signature Basketball shoe continuously shapes the way Nike should do Basketball. And with this year's model, The Kobe XI does the job in a lightweight, responsive and low-cut, but stable design to perfectly pair with Kobe's explosive exit. Thank you, Eric. And Thank you, Kobe. Enjoy your last days watching from the game you helped shape, evolve and flourish into the next level.
The more I age, the more I want cling onto and re-live the better days of my childhood. As we grow older, we seem to drift apart from that with having children, moving up in our careers, and major life events like marriage and getting the keys to our new homes. Yes, I've accepted the fact that the good old days are behind me. And yes, I do look forward to what the future holds for me and my future family. And yes, I do deal with the harsh reality of real life and adult responsibilities. But no, I'm not going to totally grow up. Yet, anyway.

Although Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was my favorite as a kid, I loved Transformers. Still do. I didn't like the movies so much (Michael Bay ruined great franchises.), but I also grew up watching G1 and Beasties. I remember walking through toy stores as a kid thinking to myself 'When I grow up, I can buy whatever I want!'. To an extent that does hold some truth and now that I've found a toy worth collecting/buying, I cashed that chip in a couple years ago.

The Takara/Hasbro Transformers Masterpiece series is a perfect representation and re-imagining of the 1980s-early 90s G1 series in a larger and more complex scale. Some would say it's 'kids stuff', but all on the contrary lol. These joints hit the spot for adult Transformers fans and toy collectors alike:

1. We ARE the generation that grew up with G1. I'm 30. I'm actually at the bottom of the threshold for G1 fans in a sense that if I were born any later than 1985, I probably would have been too young to get into the series in the first place.

2. These toys (even the packaging) are of extremely high quality with so much attention to detail. Nothing of which R&D really needs to put into your typical children's toy for $9.99 at Toys R Us. Comprised of endless moving parts, high tensile plastic and die-cast components and the endless hours of engineering put into it, Takara/Hasbro makes sure each piece is reminiscent to their G1 counterpart, which is dope as fuck.

3. With the previous being said, comes the price. There is no way a typical parent would buy their kid a re-hashed 1980s collectable toy for over $100 US. Some discontinued and rare models can go anywhere from $600-800. Like the BAPE x Takara MP-10 Optimus. Yes, they are quite expensive, but like any other hobby, what isn't?

4. The engineering is too sophisticated for a children's toy. These are a BITCH to transform sometimes. And good luck doing it for the first time without the set of illustrated instructions it comes with. Which is in Japanese BTW. I've almost broken some parts trying to transform a couple of these.

Now that's out of the way, I added new segment to the blog called "J2 Un-DS: Transformers Masterpiece Edition". I've been collecting these for a couple of years now. In 2014, my girlfriend and I were walking around the Calgary Comic Expo and I ran into a highly detailed, larger scale, transformable version of Soundwave. One of my favorite characters. Although I had no idea these even existed, I wanted to start collecting these. $285 was pretty steep, but hell, I had to have it. Hasbro's MP-02 Masterpiece Soundwave was as amazing as it was complex. I was hooked upon unboxing and with me well off into retirement from the sneaker culture, I figured I'd have some fun collecting something else I think I'd enjoy. Stay tuned.
It's been almost 4 years since my last post and some of you may be wondering "Why did you come back?". I'm leaning into my chair sipping my routine Tim Horton's Dark Roast Regular whilst staring blankly at my random array of vinyls displayed on my desk (toys, not records). For the life of me, I can't seem to think of a reason. In doing so, I found that there is no reason for me to come back to this.

It's 2015 and I'm turning 30. This may not mean a whole lot, but in 2015, no one wants to read blogs anymore (I think). People are either too busy, too lazy or too stupid to read anything more than a paragraph long. Society has dumbed down the way we communicate as human beings and has reduced social media into the form of 'likes', 'follows' and 120 characters or less. And although more people would stomach reading the ramblings of a 30 year old rather than someone 10 years younger (which is basically when I started blogging), I'm still 30. I'm almost irrelevant when it comes to pop culture and media. And when I say almost, I mean at least I'm on this blog rather than on my table writing letters to the editor by hand.

When your 30, you have friends who are also 30. In my case, almost all of them are older than I am. They probably won't even see this. Because when you're in your 30s, you're way passed trying to hang on to your youth, especially when you are married with kids. Everyone is too wrapped up in their own little suburban bubble to even give a shit about this blog or what I have to say. And after finally dropping all social media accounts after years of using and abusing, I finally feel so clean and sober from the online 'reality' bullshit and social media justice warriors that I feel somewhat free. So why am I here? Why, after 4 years, did I come back to this? As I take one last sip of my lukewarm coffee and toss it in the trash, I realized that this blog is now only reasonable outlet to share my random thoughts without going on drunk rants or commenting on a picture of what some ass hat ate last night. So enjoy.

Nike Kobe VII (7)

I haven't done one of these in awhile, probably because I haven't stepped on a basketball court in ages, due to hockey season. But in light of the recent release of the Nike Kobe VII System, I just had to step on the hardwood again to try them out. For those not familiar with the Kobe System and it's satirical and comedic advertisements, it's the concept of customizable basketball footwear based on user preference for both comfort and performance. The same design concept applied by Jordan Brand in their successful Air Jordan 2011, which upped the ante even more so for their 2012 model (I'll probably review that as well once I find a colorway I like).

Nike Kobe VII (7) System packaging

First impressions are everything. The marketing and 'push' for the Kobe system skyrocketed this year due to it's design concept and advertisements. From 2011, it really isn't anything new or ground breaking, but it's a first for the Kobe line. Based on hype alone, Nike may have oversold themselves on this one.

The Nike Kobe VII System comes with one (1) pair of shoes and two (2) insole cushioning inserts - 'Attack Fast' and 'Attack Strong'. The upper of the Kobe VII features a full Flywire construction, outer lacing system, outrigger support, molded collar, phylon mid-sole and overall low cut design. All the things that are all too familiar in the Kobe line, with the addition of a 3D heel clip to ensure lock-down support, a glass composite mid-foot shank and herringbone traction.

Play Strong insert (Left); Play Fast insert (Right)

Comparing this generation to it's low-cut predecessors, the Kobe VII ended up being a little heavier this year. You can only cut so much weight until you compromise performance, so I personally didn't mind the weight of the shoe, as long as it wasn't a brick coughFoampositecough. Because of the extra support needed for interchangeable insoles, I guess Nike felt it was necessary to beef up the mid-sole area and strengthen the heel cup.

Fit/Comfort
The upper construction of the shoe consists primarily of Flywire, which was lined with some sort of polyurethane casing which made them stiff upon my first wear. It wasn't as stiff as the Kobe Vs, but also wasn't as flexible and forgiving as the Kobe VIs or IVs. As far as ventilation goes, one drawback to having Flywire is that it doesn't allow of any ventilation like mesh or leather does (leather can be perforated), which cause major problems later.

Flywire upper w/ synthetic support overlay

Standing on both feet felt great as far as fit goes. The 3D heel clip and molded collar would have done an excellent job if it weren't for the edge of the insole pushing my feet forward and away from the heel when I was running. This resulted in poor lock down fit in the heel area. Kobes' IV - VI gave me no problems at all as far as lock down goes, but it seems the interchangeable insoles were causing the problem.

3D heel clip for support and stability

Although the shoe was snug fitting, the lack of heel lock-down caused my feet to move inside the shoe due to the nature of the interchangeable insole. The lacing kept my forefoot still but the heel moving up and down when running caused my forefoot to rub closely on the edges of the insert. The insert also bends and rubs on the foot because the walls of the insert are so high. Combine that with heavy perspiration, it results in terrible blisters. I've never experienced such a thing with the Air Jordan 2011, or with any shoe for that matter.

Let me just get this out of the way: the ankle wrap does absolutely nothing. It really didn't add any extra protection at the ankle, other than the fact that it restricted a bit of movement, although not that much. So let's not put that into consideration.

Molded collar for ankle support and heel lock down.

In light of the useless ankle wrap, the molded collar and 3D heel clip, again, did a great job in holding together my ankle. However, because of the extra movement in the shoe from the insole, I did slip once or twice out of position and nearly rolled my ankle. It could be just me, but from what I have read, alot of people are experiencing the same problems.

Traction
Nike made a wise decision in bringing back the triangular herringbone traction pattern on the out-sole of the forefoot. The Kobe IV was nearly perfect in terms of traction for this reason. Toe off felt comfortable and stuck to the ground like it supposed to. The crash pad on the heel felt better on the IVs and VIs though.
Cushioning/Stability
The 'Attack Fast' insert comes with an inner neoprene 'Power Stretch' sleeve that hooks onto the insert, which fits like a low cut sock when put on. The insole includes both heel and forefoot Zoom Air for quick transition response. The glass-composite carbon shank relieves any duties for mid foot cushioning, so full-length Zoom isn't really required.

Heel Zoom Air

In terms of fitment, I liked these a little more than the 'Attack Strong' insert, just because I didn't have to deal with the ankle wrap. But that's irrelevant in this segment. The Zoom Air was responsive and placed exactly where I needed it. However, I had no idea why Nike (by Nike, I mean Eric Avar) placed the Zoom Air deep under the phylon at the heel when the foam is that thick. Initially, it felt great but eventually, you have to really stomp and break down that phylon to compress the Zoom that's hiding under it. My guess, upon thinking about it more after my run, is that the Zoom Air under the phylon was designed to bounce off the outsole of the shoe rather than push the heel off directly. For me, it didn't work too well.

Attack Strong insert w/ Cushlon foam

The 'Attack Strong' insert comes with that same neoprene 'Power Stretch' material only in the form of an ankle wrap. The entire mid-sole is comprised of Cushlon- a pillowy, bouncy foam that provides impact protection and landing. The Although this insert gave me the most problems in terms of fitment, it was my favorite insert in terms of actual cushioning. I loved running in the Cushlon more so than the Zoom because of the nice ride that was easy on my bum knee. I'm also more of a spot up shooter than a quick slasher, so this type of cushioning was more fitting for a player like myself.

8/10

Overall
Because of my positive personal experience with the Air Jordan 2011, I was dying to try the Nike Kobe VII System. With the interchangeable mid-sole concept from the Air Jordan 2011 fused with the low cut stylings and technology that comes hand in hand with the Nike Kobe line, I got the best of both worlds, right?

Well, let's just say this: I loved the traction and cushioning, I loved the aesthetics and presentation, and I really loved the TV ads. But honestly, all that is overshadowed by poor fitment and execution of a proper interchangeable mid-sole system. The lack of heel lock down and chaffing caused major problems and discomfort and ultimately, led to injury. I actually spent a week inactive due to blisters on BOTH feet.

Perhaps, in the future I will either use thicker socks or go up half a size and run another review. But for now, based on my current experience with the Kobe System, it is an utter disappointment for a shoe that costs nearly $200 US. Bring on the Air Jordan 2012.

I've been collecting J's for about 12 years now. And I've been wearing Swooshes and Jumpmen on my feet since I was born. Literally. I also still own and wear Air Jordans. So in light of that, the title may be a litte contradicting on my part. You also may be thinking, "What a hypocritical bastard, to say such a thing". Although I still wear J's on a regular basis, my statement still holds some truth. Because most of my J's don't suck, but the guys who make them do.

Jordan Brand is no longer the brand it's supposed to be. It's not what it was. And I don't think JB will ever go back. If you've been around the sneaker market for a long time, you'll notice the significant change in quality control, mass production and quality of materials of the Air Jordan line up.

I'm not THAT old, but I've been around long enough to know that Jordan Brand/Nike was once a company was produced good quality Air Jordans that made the brand popular in the first place (I mean, other than MJ himself). It was their initial success that skyrocketed the demand for Air Jordans these past 6-8 years. It was their initial success that we can hold on to memories of owning our very first pair of OG J's. It was their initial success that broke necks in the school yard when you arrived on the first day of class. And it was their initial success that we now see highschool kids, young collectors, hypebeasts and JB bandwagon-jumpers alike, come out of the woodwork like never before.

And because of that, somewhere along the line throughout the past few years, there was a shift in the target demographic. More and more people want Jordans, in addition to the veteran collectors and OG sneaker enthusiasts alike. In retrospect, it seemed to me like Jordan Brand was out to test the waters with the Countdown Packs to measure it's success in the newly amassed sneaker community.

1. Mass-producing the ENTIRE Air Jordan Retro line-up (Air Jordan I to Air Jordan XX2)
2. Manufacture them in cheaper/poor quality materials and different molds to save money
3. Releasing them to the public at ridiculous prices ($310US ~ $399CDN/pack)

Jordan Brand crossed their fingers and the market blew up. I guess I was a small part of the problem considering I purchased all 11 CDPs and even doubled up on some. But even if I hadn't, they would be sitting on someone elses shelves, and putting money in JB's pocket regardless. And little did I know at the time, the quality was sub-par, which to me, was a forshadowing of the future of Jordan Brand footwear.

In my opinion, the CDP craze is what sparked the decline of quality Jordan Brand products. The way I see it, if you produce exceptional results across the globe by spending less money on solid materials, thus manufacturing more product and pushing them at outrageous prices, then...why would you stop? Jordan Brand came to a realization that no matter how shitty you're shoes are, people will buy them. So, like any business would, they took advantage of that. And in turn, took advantage of us - the loyal consumerbase.

As a result, less and less of us are buying new Js (including me), yet, they're still doing extremely well in industry. So who's clearing sales racks across the country? It's the new guys. Those said high school kids, the young collectors, the bandwagon jumpers and hypebeasts.

The modern day 'sneaker enthusiast' doesn't care about quality, where they came from, or how much they are. They barely know when they orignally released. They wouldn't know the history (and controversy) of the Air Jordan XI or the Air Jordan III, and why they're so popular, nor would they know the significance of next years Chicago X or Obisidian XII release. The average consumer buys the sneaker because it's "an Air Jordan".

Jordan Brand sold out to us and sacrificed their loyal customers who've bought J's for YEARS without hesitation, only to exploit the larger market of naive consumers who rush over to their local Champs and pay overpriced dollar for the latest Retro J because they see Yeezy rock 'em at some concert somewhere.

I used to think it were these types of people that were ruining it for everyone else, but at the end, it's Jordan Brand. That fact that they can slip away with producing poor quality Retros, garbage Fusion make-ups and ridicuous repetitions of colorways, while clearing record breaking profit margins is astounding. This kills the lifestyle. Hunting for Retros used to be fun for me, but nowadays, all I have to do to find the Holy Grail is to simply wait for it to release. It's lost it's appeal, somewhat.
ISN'T IT OBVIOUS THAT JB/ NIKE HAVE BEEN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF US? They make something limited back in 05, then release it again, seriously imo they're point of doing that was to get a demand mainly from us (collectors), and then once they saw that we went crazy for it, they took advantage and retroed that CW again in 2010. Because they retroed that cw, that signals to me that any shoe is up for grabs as far as retros go. I'm not saying that we'll ever see thunder and lightning IVs, quay Vs, Tokyo Vs, XQ Is, or even DMPs, BUT for the simple fact that Altitude XIIIs did retro, anything is possible imo. The exploiting goes beyond that as far as we go though, JB waited 10 years to retro Concords, but only three years for the Black/ Cement IIIs (08) to now. Same concept with Black Vs (23 version). My point here, is that JB held out on the one shoe that we (collectors) fiend for, not saying everyone who wanted the 00 pair will cop the 2011 version of the Concords, but then they have no regrets about retroing shoes like WC IIIs, TB IIIs, BC IIIs, Black Vs (23s) with a relatively short amount of time in between each retro.

So the reason why they have waited so long on say Concords is because they don't want collectors to fully believe that they don't care about us, by waiting a long time in between Concords, it creates the illusion that JB cares about us (that's all JB needs to keep some collectors interested and to continue having the shoes be of some kind of relevance to us, even though, I'm sure most of the older heads/ people who know what's up do in fact understand JB/ Nike's strategy.

IMO, some reasons they have continued to retro the same stuff are 1) they don't have to bother with thinking of new stuff since the people will continue to buy the older cws...and 2) because JB is out of ideas as far as new models and also new cws on existing models.

I haven't purchased any 2011 retros this year to make a comparison segment or video, so I'm going to post Brian's video of the CDP 2008 vs 2011 comparison of the Air Jordan III black/cement. The difference is crystal clear. BTW, my opinions and views don't reflect those of Brian or Sneaker Files. Let's just get that outta the way lol.
And it doesn't mean I won't stop buying Jordans.
Yep. I will be in Las Vegas starting Thursday at exactly 7:39pm MT. Pretty excited, but I don't know what to expect. It will be my first trip with a fairly large group of people. The last couple times I went, we were 4 guys doing whatever we wanted. This trip, although I myself, am single, seems like a couples retreat. Hopefully, it doesn't turn out that way but it sure is looking so.

One of the main reasons why I am very excited about this trip, however, is the fact that I haven't left the city this year. Which is very rare. I guess the year was spent focusing on work and waiting for this particular event and preparing myself financially. Part of the reason why I haven't updated the blog is because I used to use it to share my travel experiences and post pictures, as you can see from my recent posts and inactivity, nothing much has been going on with my life right now to even post anything.

But, since I AM leaving, I guess I can use this trip as an opportunity to update it when I get back with pictures, stories and travel experiences. Hopefully, I'll be able to remember most of it. Haha.
After a new collective bargaining agreement, the lock-out is finally being lifted! The NBA and the Players Association get ready for a 66-game 2011-2012 season. Thank God. I watched quite a bit of basketball last season, and because of the lock out, I'll be watching even more this season, albeit the short schedule. You really don't know what you have until it's gone.

First game is on Christmas Day. That'll be quite the season opener, which should make for a goooood Christmas. I guess most of us got what we wanted. I wished however, that the season started earlier since I'll be in Vegas in a couple weeks; it'd be nice to make a detour to LA or PHX to catch a game.

Also, as soon as I woke up and read the news, this began playing in my head immediately:

And in light of all that, I guess, I'm back too. It's been quite awhile since I've updated this thing. I've been quite busy with work. I haven't had too much time to spend on this blog this past month or so, but it's good to be back to continue writing and posting pics.

My pictures have run dry as well. I've been too lazy to go out and shoot, mostly because of the weather. But I'll try and get out there once in awhile and check back in here as well. If you've kept up this far and check back frequently, thank you for reading.

Also, hit me up on Instagram @j2_inc.

When I was a kid, I looked up to alot of people on TV. I used to watch WWF alot. I used to buy the magazines, posters, tickets for events, toys and of course, catch them on Monday nights and PPVs. Other than Bret Hart, I had very few childhood wrestling heroes. One of those few, was Razor Ramon. The first 'bad guy' or 'heel' (wrestling term for villain) that I liked in wrestling. Obviously, wrestling back in the day wasn't like what it is today. Wrestling, in my opinion, was so much better and Scott Hall was partly the reason why.

He was the 'epitome' of what a wrestling superstar is supposed to be - 6' 7" and 290lbs of solid muscle, with charisma to match, who became a house hold name in the 90s. From the Razors Edge, the toothpick, the shiny attire to the iconic and revolutionizing NWO days, he had it all. His career was what sparked many careers to follow and he gave his fans, including me, unforgettable memories. In fact, my favorite match of all time - Razor Ramon vs Shawn Michaels in a ladder match for the 2 Intercontinental Championship belts at Wrestlemania X.

His success also became his downfall. ESPN had recently done a piece on Scott Hall on ESPN E:60. If you've seen the movie, he IS "The Wrestler". Life imitating art, in a very tragic way of course. He's still alive, but what's truly sad is what his life has come to be. Drugs and alcohol had taken over, his life collapsed, his health had gone down hill and it really doesn't seem like he's getting better. I'm hoping things turn around for the rest of his life, because it really is sad to see a childhood hero go like this.

The special can be seen here.

And to commemorate his illustrious career in pro wrestling, a few videos:
I've been quite busy as of late. The ball is finally rolling at work, which means I get home later in the day, where I have to do my article posts for Sneaker Files, eat dinner and play hockey. And in the in-between time, I'd devoted a few hours a day to playing NBA 2K12. Haha.

Any who, I'm working on a post, which I will have ready pretty soon. In the mean time, enjoy the The Avengers movie trailer.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is probably one of the few shows I can watch all day. Watching re-runs during my sick days or lazy Sundays strike the thought of nostalgia every time. I guess growing up watching 6 seasons of DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince will do that to you.

I love the 90's. I love 90's TV. I love the 90's footwear. Did I mention I love the 90's? And in light of reading Complex's Complete Guide to Seinfeld's Sneakers, I thought I'd come up with my own "guide" to Will Smith's line up of kicks that he donned for 7 years on the show. Here are my top 30 kicks worn by the Fresh Prince. Enjoy.
